hartland park - win at appeal

Date: Sept 2009

The proposed distribution park at Hartland Park, Farnborough, has been given the go ahead by the Secretary of State after a lengthy public inquiry at the end of 2008.

He issued his decision in September, clearing the way for developers Prudential and ProLogis to progress the 1.32 million square metre development.

Michael Sparks Associates have been the master planners and architects for the development since inception in 2004 and have managed several planning applications on this sensitive site since then.

Michael Sparks Associates are a member of one of the contractor-led teams selected by Royal Mail for their £300 million procurement framework. The team, headed by McLaren,  demonstrated the capabilities and experience necessary to be part of this important programme.

MEPC’s new office building at Chineham Park, Central 40, has scooped the BCO “Best Commercial Workplace Award 2009”, in the South West regional awards which were presented at a ceremony held at the Explore-at-Bristol Centre on the 7th May. The region includes all areas to the west of London, including the South West  and South Wales.

Michael Sparks, who was present at the ceremony, says “We are obviously delighted at receiving this award. This recognises that good quality, well designed commercial architecture can earn a place amongst the very best that the profession can offer!”

Central 40,  Michael Sparks Associates’ new office project at Chineham near Basingstoke, has been short-listed for the British Council of Offices Awards for the South and South West Region, the winner of which will be announced in May 2009. We will keep you posted on the outcome!

big retailers sign up for closed loop

Michael Sparks Associates, acting as architects for the developer Goodman, have recently completed a recycling centre in Dagenham in east London for Closed Loop, which will recycle plastic packaging so it can be returned to the same use. In its 26th June 2008 edition, London's Evening Standard reported that Marks & Spencer have signed up to use the £13 million facility following its launch of "Plan A", a five-year, 100-point plan to make the company more environmentally friendly.

M&S chief executive Sir Stuart Rose said: "Closed Loop is a major step forward. We will be able to send our 'Food to Go' waste for recycling and use even more recycled plastic in our packaging."

Promotions at Michael Sparks Associates


Date: June 2008

We are very pleased to announce the well-deserved promotions of Paul Wahba, who has recently joined our experienced team of Associates, and Melanie Cobley, who has stepped up to the level of Senior Architect.

Paul has been with us since May 2005, and quickly progressed to the position of a Senior Architect. He is in charge of the new mixed use development for ProLogis on  a former Rolls Royce site at Filton, Bristol, which recently received planning consent. He has been project architect on ProLogis Park, Heathrow.

Since then he has managed a number of large-scale projects exceptionally well, providing an outstanding and professional service to our Clients.  In addition to his highly valuable architectural skills, Paul has also shown dedication and commitment to the development of the Practice with the implementation of ‘blueroom’, our recently adopted and highly successful Document Management System.

Melanie joined us in 2006 and has done an excellent job on all the projects she has been involved with, which included being project architect on the new building for Frogmore at new Horizon Park at Coventry, and she has proved to be a committed and integral part of Michael Sparks Associates.

These promotions represent an important step in the development of Michael Sparks Associates and we believe they will enhance the level and strength of service that we deliver.
